Canada To Negotiate FTAs With Thailand, Japan
During the visit of Stephen Harper (pictured), the Canadian Prime Minister, to South-east
Asia, he has announced, together with Yingluck Shinawatra, the Prime
Minister of Thailand, and Yoshihiko Noda, the Prime Minister of Japan, that Canada
will pursue bilateral free trade agreements with both countries.

China To Extend Property Tax Later This Year
The National Development and Reform Commission has confirmed that the pilot property
tax presently operating in Shanghai and Chongqing will be extended to other cities
in China later this year.

UK Confirms Gambling Tax Changes
Offshore gambling firms have been dealt a blow in the United Kingdom's latest
Budget which amends the tax rules applicable to the supply of gambling services
to the UK market. Wagers will now be taxed on a point-of-consumption
basis, bringing offshore operators under the UK tax net.
Jersey Assesses UK Stamp Duty Measures
Jersey Finance, the agency responsible for the promoting the island's finance industry,
has responded to measures in the UK budget which seek to prevent stamp duty tax avoidance on the purchase of high-value property in the UK via offshore company structures.
Retailer Departs Guernsey Over VAT Relief Blow
British high street store retailer HMV has announced that it will close its warehousing and
distribution operations based in Guernsey following the confirmation from the UK government

US Senate Bill To Repeal 'Big Oil' Tax Breaks
The Democrat-led United States Senate has voted to allow a debate on the Repeal
Big Oil Tax Subsidies Act, which would end certain tax breaks for the largest
oil companies, and use the tax saved to extend, for one year, expiring energy
tax provisions and reduce the country’s fiscal deficit.
US Senate Examines Renewable Energy Tax Incentives
The Subcommittee on Energy, Natural Resources and Infrastructure of the Senate
Committee on Finance has held a hearing on how the recent and pending expirations
of key tax incentives affect the deployment of renewable energy facilities and
energy efficiency measures in the United States.
